While searching for something I had misplaced I found the front section of The Home Tribune, dated Friday August 27,1948. We had saved that issue as Tom's brother Sgt. Frances J. Parkman had been killed and his obituary and Military Funeral plans were recorded on the front page. Then I couldn't help but peruse the rest of the front page and found the following interesting as well.

My love and prayer for Larry and Trella and family for your lost of your father. I was reading the Parma announcements and saw the update. Trella I saw your dad's mother in the Malden Nursing Home when I visited my mom (Betty) just a few week's ago when I went home to see my dad in the rehab and the Golden Living Home. Your grandmother said to me that your father was in Cape and not doing too well health wise. It's been a long time since I have seen you. But I always think of home town and wonder about alot of people I grew up with. As you can remember when we live out on D highway in the house up the road from you. Well I hope and prayer that God give you and your family strength and comfort in your hearts to carry on through life. And remember God is taking care of your Dad in heaven now. As a child we went to see my Granny (Martha McCain) every summer. I still have relatives who live there. Anyway, my Granny was quite a character! Her favorite thing to say was, 'oh Lordy be!" One day my Mom got a call from my Aunt Lois Cravens (she still lives in Parma) telling her that my Granny has to get new glasses because she burned hers up in the oven! What happened was the lady across the street stayed the night with Granny. Her name was Mrs. Pigg. Her and Granny had the same glasses and Mrs. Pigg put her glasses on and Granny said they were hers! Mrs. Pgg tried to explain to her that those glasses belonged to her and that hers were sitting on the table. Granny didn't beleive her so she turned the oven on to burn up Mrs. Pigg's glasses because she thought for sure she was lying and this was going to teach her a lesson! I guess in the end she was the one who needed to be taught a lesson! The last time I was in Parma was 1982. Maybe one day I'll make it back there. I hope all of you who live there realize how lucky you are to live in a small town. I live outside of Orlando Florida and the traffic is terrible and the people can be pretty rude around here. Have a great day to all of you! Rhonda

I hope all is well and everyone up home wheather the storm. As far as down here in Houston TX my family and love ones here are fine. We were without power for a few days. Nothing like camping at your own home. I'm very thankful for learning as a child up home from family and friends and of course through what I call old school now verses the new school of what I learned how to do in time of a crisis like Hurricane IKE. Since I have lived in Houston TX from 1983 till now I have been through 2 Hurricanes 2 tropical storms and a tornadoe as far as bad storms. It was a good experience for the children, as in how to make it without all of todays technology gadgets. Ike is another example "IN GOD WE TRUST". We as believers must stand up and fight the good cause of our country and not let the words God and our faith that we believe in get wipe away. Everytime I hear the pledge or songs like America, National Anthem or any song about our country it takes me go back home !

where I learn to sing these songs, church and school of Parma. Lets all fight to keep the word God in our Pledge of the America Flag and keep the words IN GOD WE TRUST on the face of money. Now that we have e-mail and the internet we can get this message around alot faster through all of our families, love ones , relatives and friends. Remember the goods guys always wins. Well God Bless all. Love and Prayers. Carla

A BIG THANK YOU TO MAYOR RAMSEY AND THE OTHER CITY OFFICIALS SERVING MY OLD HOME TOWN.

I just discovered you have added lots more information concerning the activities going on in Parma. I read every word and am so excited to hear the improvements being made to the water district and also sounds like the law enforcement officers are doing a good job as well. When the residents see the leadership doing something positive to make the city healthier they should do everything in their power to support the efforts and offer their support in every way they can. If nothing else send a big Thank You card to each official involved. Being a leader is not an easy job but it could be made easier if those who receive the benefits would let others know they are appreciated. May God Bless each of you as you work for a better Home Town. Respectfully, Sue Rodgers Parkman

It was great to see all the Parma folk this yr.We really enjoyed seeing family. The Parkmans and the Daniels. I was glad my grandmother Jean (Parkman) Dawson, got to come with my moms sister Judy (Wilson) Phillips, and see some of the old friends and family. We really enjoyed the song Terry Blankinship wrote about Parma. The last time I guess I was in Parma was to preach my aunt Bea Parkmans funeral ;and I dont like seeing Parma friends and family that way. Time goes so fast and we all get caught up in our own lives and time and dont get to see one another like we wish we could. Parma isnt what it was when I was a kid. However, it always brings back good memories when I go through it. Seems like each street would bring up a different story in my mind .

Bill Morgan's Drug Store with the booths we would go in and drink a coke. I remember Pearl Harbor vividly. One of our Parma men Bill Bennett was on the USS Arizona (and still is). Tom and I are now home from our excursion to the Home Town Days Picnic. It was an honor to take part in the activities this year although I am not sure we did it appropriately. What the heck, we are not kids anymore so public speaking is not our usual fare. It was exciting to see my grandson-in-law Joey and his classmate Mike standing in awe listening to the various conversations between Papa Parkman and his former Parma Jet catcher Wayne Brannon, or his once quiet Jet-mate Clete Borders sharing his new found faith in Christ with all his old buddies. We are excited to hear his news and thankful for his willingness to share it.

Now

Here is my admonition to all the friends both young and not so young.

Next year be willing to volunteer to help with serving or whatever you are able to do. I see the same people year after year doing the hard labor and many young ones more able out enjoying the fellowship. It is time to take part by serving and giving the "Seniors" a well deserved break. They have done a tremendous job year after year but when I hear someone asking an 80+ year old lady to serve food when the town surely has some teenagers somewhere that could take a turn I believe it is time to let it be known publicly. Young people you will be blessed if you learn at an early age to serve others. I will even volunteer myself if we are able to travel next year.

Blessings to all who served this year. You did an excellent job and the food was GREAT! Thank You!

This name is seen on the door of an old truck. I did an internet search and found a death certificate stating that he died June 5th, 1945. Anyways I am a film collector and came across this film at auction and am reselling it. I did take several stills from the film for anyone who is interested. Regards, Shawn

My ancestor Lula Barrett Paxton lived with her husband in Como and frequented Parma, Missouri. I have posted here before but never added a photo of my great grandmother.

Do you remember...

Lula Barrett was the daughter of John Barrett and wife Ida Weatherlee. William Paxton married Lula in Mississippi County, Missouri 1906 and soon located at Como, New Madrid County, Missouri where they are found on the 1910 census. Como is situated and related closely to Parma, Missouri where the Doctor Blackman attended to the Paxton family health needs.

William Paxton is on 1880 census in New Madrid County, Missouri in the home of his father Amos Paxton, sr. William Paxton's mother was maiden named Evelin RICE.

Amos Paxton, sr. remarried later in life to Ada Kerfoot. Their youngest, Amos Andrew PAXTON lived in Como, Missouri in his youth. Eventually the first world war called and he served. After the war he came to live in Louisiana until his death. He lived in the area of Mangham, Louisiana.

In the photo "Logging Days", from the Parma Missouri celebration booklet, an Amos Paxton is in the photo and the photo is circa 1915. Judging by the youth of the men and the time period, I would have to guess that Amos Paxton, jr is in the photograph.

God Bless all that still live there! Rhonda

I just wanted to say hello, I don't make it home very often. A lot of my extended family still lives in Parma and/or attends church there. I have been researching my father's side of the family and found the website through this. I saw, at the bottom of the page, some comments from my Uncle Jay Foster about my Aunt Cindy, Uncle Delton, and Uncle Charles, Jr. Maybe I should say that I am the daughter of Terry and Patricia Ross. My Grandfather and Great Grandparents are buried in the Parma Cemetary. If anyone has more information on the Ross Family in early Parma, I would love to hear about it.

Just a family update - my father, Terry, is still in the Air Force, most of you probably see my mother, Pat, at church on Sundays with my Grandma, Vernell Ross. My sister is in Art school in Chicago, and I am a History Teacher in North Carolina. Oh, and Cindy is in England but her email address is still the same as what Jay gave.

My email address is kddeluna@msn.com if you have any stories to share.

Joseph Paxton census 1880 New Madrid County, Missouri. His son, William Paxton married Lula Barrett at Mississippi County, Missouri and then came to live in Como Twp, Missouri by 1910.

The Paxton family physician was Dr. Blackman of Parma, Missouri. My grandfather born 1910.

Paxtons present in North East Arkansas as early as 1844 or before. Civil war 1861. Paxton of Missouri and Arkansas seem to appear on both Union and CSA muster rolls. After the ware between the states Paxtons migrated through Dunklin County, Missouri and into New Madrid County, Missouri.

The Paxton tie between New Madrid County and Dunklin County. Bowman Paxton was to be tried in New Madrid County, Missouri for alleged murder done in Dunklin County, Missouri. Bowman Paxton was born to Joseph Paxton and Susana Blacker at Tyronza, Arkansas. Bowman Paxton married numerous times in Dunklin County, Missouri and was acquiring some land/wealth. He visited New Madrid County's Portageville and seemed to be generally acceptable to all until the alleged murder of McGilvery. Bowman Paxton was murdered on his extradiction to New Madrid County within the Dunklin County borders an thus never went to trial.

The patriarch of the family was Amos Paxton who aquired the first purchase of North East Arkansas land from the US Government about 1844. Before then the 1840? census shows a Amos Paxton in Hickman County, Kentucky. Amos Paxton was possibly born circa 1777 and would have possibly been in defense of the States during the war of 1812. England invaded the United States of America.

It was great to read your letter and to see the pictures of Parma. Your interest in Parma amazes me. I am 70 years old and was raised in Parma.

I love this little town and love going back and visiting with home town folks. You spoke of the two railroads that your mother said ran through Parma.

She was right, there used to be two railroads that crossed just south and west of the main part of Parma. The Frisco ran north and south and the Cottonbelt ran east and west. I left Parma in 1956 and am not sure when they removed the Frisco railroad line. Parma was a wonderful place to grown up especially in the 40's and 50's. I am sure others feel the same about the years they grew up in Parma.

Thank you for sharing the memories of your mother.

Each year when we return for Home Town Days I see Thelma still looking healthy and strong like she did many years ago. Her mother and my mother in law Mrs. Era Parkman were very good friends for many years, as we all went to General Baptist Church together. Of course Dr. Husted and Dr. Gilbert kept the town healthy when we were children back in the 30's-40's.

They didn't deliver me but they cared for me later when I played outside in cold weather and developed respiratory problems. My great aunt Dora Calvin delivered me for $5.00 which was a lot of money in 1936. Doc also sewed up Tom's eyelid and head when a big truck tire he was working on blew back into his face. He didn't have far to go with the station just across the street from the Dr. office. We lived in front of the Methodist Church when I was in the first grade and at that time I knew every person on that street by name and everyone treated each other like family. All the kids played outside under the street lights at night until Mothers started the night call to come home. Those were the Good Ole Days when times were hard. No TV or violence to worry your parents about. Progress isn't always good in some ways. I am thankful for my birthplace and the many friends both young and old that were looking out for me as a young child. And how could we ever forget Mrs. Crites..."hey little girl come talk a minute" and it wound up the whole afternoon. Good memories, happy memories and some sad ones too when we return and the houses are shells of what they once were because the lives that touched ours are no longer calling to us. Oh but the memories still remain and for that I am deeply thankful. Our youth today have missed out on a great era in America and I have to share my part of the blame. I grew up and moved on but have never forgotten my roots. Parma my birthplace but Loves Park Illinois my home for 42 years. Thanks for the beautiful beginning in 1936-1966. I will return.

The average heights of the stalks are 12 - 15 feet.  The tallest (measured) was 18 feet tall.  The name of the corn is either "Hickory King" or "Hickory cane".  He believes the real name is "Hickory King".  He received the seeds from Wayne McKinzie.  It is open pollinating corn and is usually planted in early May for the best results.  In front of him are his okra plants.  Ted certainly has reason to be very pleased with his beautiful garden, right here in Parma.

I owe you all a sincere apology for my lack of staying in touch. I owe a debt of gratitude to all of you who help create within me a heartland attitude that has helped me in every aspect of my daily life.

I currently live in Vacaville, California. I have been here for thirty years now and will likely remain for the next . . . years. . .lol. . . .

I own and operate my own satellite communications field service company. The expression, ". . . the world is my oyster", couldn't be more descriptive of how I live and work. My work takes me from numerous western pacific locations to European, Nordic and African locales. Work is fun, never boring and usually always aboard cruise ships or oil rigs.

I look forward to getting back and staying in touch from this point on. It's been much tooooooo long since the last time I was home.

It is neat to query the net and see a really cool Parma, Missouri web site. You guys did good.

Friday It was just light snow till about noon then it started to come down, I mean really come down. And by 10 p.m. we had between 5 and 6 inches. We had a meeting to go to in Dexter that evening and on the way back at 10 p.m. the "Hunterville" road was packed with 3" of packed snow, not plowed. Really poor for driving faster than 30 MPH. However, Saturday morning the snow was still very light and deep in places. Right outside our door was a bank about two feet deep, just right to dip a bowl in and get it full of light snow to make snow Icecream. It was really good just like when I was a kid back in the 30's and 40's.

To the young lady speaking of her grandfather Hendricks. Most everyone in Parma knew Bro. Dave Hendricks as he live a long life there. I was once a neighbor of his and remember one time he called upon me to come across the street to witness the marriage ceremony of an older gentleman and lady.

I will never for get his statement which would normally go something like this. "For as long as ye both shall live". Well Bro. Dave didn't say the expected line and instead said this " For as long as it lasts". I was about to explode with laughter but held my piece. He also drove a school bus for many years as well.

I haven't lived in Parma since 1966 but have many fond memories and return each July for the Home Town Days. If you have not been before please mark your calendar and make an effort to join us. Hope to meet you there. Sue

I'm still on my quest for information about my family. I hope to get back to Parma this summer, during Founders day, and will see if I can speak with any of you who may have know them. I recently have found where my Grandfather, William Solomon Adams, lived in the Parma area in 1918 and worked for Charley Adams on a farm near there. Have I awoken any memories? If so I can be contacted at NSJWA@netzero.com.

Thanks, hoping to hear from you

John

Hi Candy,
You didn't leave your email address so I'll respond this way. I talked with Mayor Ramsey regarding your request. He remembers your Grandfather, Dave Hendrix. He also drove a school bus for a number of years. Thanks for the great compliments regarding our Parma website.  We are proud of our city and proud of our website.  And we have an excellent webmaster.
Best regards,

My Mother is from Parma and I remember visiting my grandparents there bunches of times as a little, little girl. Does anyone remember my grandfather who was a preacher? I cannot remember his first name but my Mother's maiden name was Hendrix and I am pretty sure her Mother's name was Cecil.

By the way, your web-site is excellent, especially considering that Parma really is a small town. It shows there's a lot of love for your city.

Debby, who was born in Parma, and has lived in Parma off and on for many years, but now resides in Columbia TN, is now a Grandma. Madison Grace Farrell was born today, February 7th at 1:04 pm. She is 20 inches and weighs 6 lbs. 11 oz. Ashely and Madison are doing fine, and David (also a former resident of Parma) is a proud Dad.  So that would make George (Jerry) and Sidney Husted Great Grand Parents.

Hi Everyone,

Marijean and I got together when I was stationed at Scott AFB during Desert Storm (she worked for the VA). Both brothers, Bill Tom and Bobby, are both gone now. I can't remember her last name; husband is Jerry, daughter, Carmen. Would love to talk with her - please E-mail me at annlogle@yahoo.com or 314-423-2762. Would enjoy hearing from anyone from Parma.

My husband, Ron, and I are both retired from the Navy. His was sudden, a heart attack in January 07 which required a quadruple bypass - but he is doing great now. He'd always dreamed of owning a corvette and now has a beautiful one. We enjoy traveling, visiting friends, and playing with our pets.

Mrs. Barney would be happy to know that I still use my shorthand skills. Ivy and Jo Allen live not far from me; he's been at Flo Valley College for several years. Jo's health is not good and she uses a walker. I also stay in touch with David Davis - I was sad to learn that their only son, Scott; died out in California. Tommie and Betty Robison live in Springfield, MO and are in poor health. Son, Tom's family lives nearby.

My brother, Bill and wife, Anita; are retired and living in Galatia, IL near their daughter and her family. Two sons, Curt, an autobody man is in MS and Jim (retired USAF) in Germany.

I don't get down often but talk with Raymond Dickerson. I'm sure many of you know that we lost our classmate, Pat Crain Owen; in January 07.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone this July.

Ann

I'd just like to know if there are other members of class of '48 that will be at the Down Home Days 2008. And, if so, is there any interest in having a reunion. Possibly in one of the areas of the Friday night get together so we can also visit with other old timers. I did graduate in '48, altho not in Parma. However, I went through the first eight years there with you, and I've relocated back here in my home town of Parma.

Our deepest sympathy to the families of Willie Ford and Mrs. Garrard. Both of these people touched our life in many ways. We have very fond memories of both of them. Willie and my family went back many years. Mrs. Garrard shared her musical talents with the community and was called upon regularly to sing. She sang with so much feeling and touched many hearts with her song. Parma has lost a big asset in their passing but all of us could learn from their serving spirit. Hard shoes to fill but we should keep trying.

I just wanted to let everyone know my father, Willie Ford, passed away at the Malden Nursing home on Sunday January 20,2008. He was a life long resident of Parma and made his living as a brick layer. He raised 7 kids and was married to my mother Elouise Allen, she passed away April 22, 1991. I also wanted to say thank you to all of you in town who was always nice to my father. Many years after he retired from brick laying he would mow yards and pick up cans for something to do and a little extra cash. He often told me of his friends who would save their cans and give them to him. Such a simple act, but demonstrated great kindness. Dad was 84 years old, he went very peacefully with family by his side. His arrangements will be, Watkinson & Son's funeral home with visitation Tuesday night 22nd. The funeral will be Wed the 23rd at 1:00 P.M. I sure will miss him.

It's been many years since I have been to Parma. My great grandpa has been gone a long time. I remember spending the long summer months on his farm just outside of town. The best part was the barn loft filled full of loose hay where my siblings, cousins and I would play all day long - only to face a cold bath in a washtub on the back porch. Grandpa had a special treat fo me; he would hitch up the wagon and pull into a vacant field where we would play cowboys and indians. Although he was a poor man, he was also a good man - I tell my son about the time I spent at Grandpa's farm. I sure miss him.

I can only hope I came to be the man my great grandfather was.

My step-mother, Lula May, took my younger brother and I to her dad's in Parma. We went ahead of my dad and twin brothers. I believe it was 1964. I didn't stay there but a few months. I remember the cotton mill, railroad tracks, and the roller skating rink. I did love to go roller skating. While attending school there, I joined the band and learned to play the saxophone. I tried eating frog, "coon", and rabbit that Grandpa Catron had hunted and prepared himself. He took me frog hunting one time. I also remember he chewed tobacco and had that awful spit can. YUK! All in all, for the short time I lived there, it was an experience I will never forget.

To any friends of Derl Warren, M.D.

I am the eldest son and namesake of Derl Warren of the class of 1959. He was the son of Thomas and Elma Warren and lived in Parma for most of his childhood and high school years. I would like to inform all interested parties of his passing on December 14, 2007 in Marion, IL. You can read his obituary at www.wilsonmcreynolds.com. I know that he had fond memories of many people in Parma and would want them to be informed of his passing.

I apologize for not writing a post here sooner, but I just learned of this site's existence.

Thank you,

Julie Andrews turns 69 - To commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "Sound Of Music." I know you remember!

Here are the lyrics she used:

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These are a few of my favorite things. Cadillacs and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things. When the pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don't feel so bad. Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favorite things. Back pains, confused brains, and no need for sinnin', Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin', And we won't mention our short, shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things.> When the joints ache, When the hips break, When the eyes grow dim, Then I remember the great life I've had, And then I don't feel so bad.

Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores. Please share Ms. Andrews' clever wit and humor with others who would appreciate it.
