i lived in parma from 1954 to 1961 or from the age of 3 to 10. i started first through forth grade in parma , move away then returned for seventh grade, eight and ninth grade.those were the best years of my life. i miss the warm fall days laying around under tony lapes grandfathers grape vinyard eating his grapes(WIYHOUT PERMISSION I MUST SAY)I've never tasted a grape since that tasted that good. i long for the days of being able to roam the country side without seeing a poasted no trespassing sign. hunting and fishing where and when we wanted. all the things that were right with parma only make the things that are wrong with the rest of the world more obvious.

I was born in Parma 1945. My Grandfather was Dave Hendrix a Methodist Minister and school bus driver there. My father was Tom Hendrix who was killed in WWII at age 19. I was only four months old when he died. My mother left Parma very soon after, but I returned and stayed with my Grandparents almost every summer for two weeks to a month in the early and mid fiftys. Downtown Parma was still populated with stores and even a movie theather then. I have made several trips back even though my Grandparents have passed. I have no remaining family there but it seems if I am anywhere close I can not resist passing through. I love to go by Grandpa's old house and always drive downtown, even took several pictures of the main street a few years back. Just wanted to say I have some great memories of my time there with my Grandpa. After all the years and all the miles I still feel a kindship to Parma and consider it to be my home town.

I remember when Parma had a population of 1,719 of course the school was still teaching younger folks how to read and write. I found your site very interesting and would like to see more of Parma history from time to time, for me my best memory is the years from 1961 to 1973, for me it meant growing up in the country, that was down wind from Stewarts chicken farm. I reckon most folks around Parma ate eggs from George Stewarts, poultry houses, but those chickens laid some good tasting eggs but those Chicken houses shore did Stink!!on a hot summer day and when the wind would be lightly blowing from the S.E. direction and the smell would be awful!kids on the school bus would make rude remarks about us kids smelling bad) I think at one time in our lives growing up like that hurt are feelings a mite but as we got older we kinda took pleasure In seeing those that made those remarks and hurt are feelings make those funny faces, and try to hold there breath until we off the bus , until our Bus driver was moving on down the road. Hey thats just one of many stories I could talk about butI'd run out of space ha ha But I did enjoy just it sittin here thinking about the Good and Bad times growing up In Parma,Missouri: I didnt graduate then with my classmates after 12 years of schooling; ~ ButI was renamed "Sue" after singing A Boy named sue By the Great Jonny Cash in a talant show and got a standing Ovation. It scared me to death!!! I just knew I was going to be in trouble,Hey it turned out better than I thought~.

Do you know who I am ?

Is Parma still a cotton producing town? I was a mere lad of nine (9) when my family left there in November of 1952. I am now 58 years old, so you know that was a long time ago! Went to a small country school called Smith School. All of the classes were held in two rooms. I was related to Mr. Jesse Wilson, who owned some property. There was also a gentleman by the name of Johnny Rutledge(sic) who was a cotton farmer. Would be interesting to receive a message from soneone who knew those people. My daddy sharecropped for a person by the name of Dick Spitzer (sic).

I really enjoyed reading the "Tin Mans" comments. It brought back menories of my childhood in Parma. I remember W.L. Ramsey's and Frank Bean and some of the others. My dad, Sam Ross, also worked at Ramsey's during this time. I remebered the spit and whittle bench. I would sometime stand around and listen to their stories. Thanks Tin man for bringing back some great menories.

I have been to two picnics and enjoyed myself evetytime.

I don't know who the tin man is but we share a lot of the same memories. He/She could very well have been a class mate of mine in the class of "58. I remember all the businesses named and would like to add one, Hedrick's IGA. I bagged a lot of groceries out of that store. (the original) not the one built across the street. Joyce and I were at the 2001 picnic and had a great time. I don't know if we will make the 2002 get together or not, only time will tell.

Hi folks, Just thought I'd drop you all a line to let you know it's really great up here. Sherrill and I just had a wonderful vacation and we really had the bull by the horns back there in the OK territory. However, The Lord called my name yesterday afternoon and, of course I jumped up and answered. You know it's, well I have to tell you that it's better than OK up here. Talk about a place with a view - this is it. I'll miss you all, especially that great woman Sherrill, but it shore is wonderful up here. The Lord said that He wanted me up here while I was still in good shape. He certainly has His act together. Well, I guess that's all for right now. I'll be seein' you. And you know that's the truth: I'll be seeing you again. Your old buddy, Jim

Message: Just checking email tonight and usually check the Parma website looking forward to reading any new messages. I've been on vacation for several weeks and missed the letter about Parma being a dump. But no matter, those of us who grew up in Parma and still have fond memories of what used to be a bustling little town and the people who lived there will always hold Parma and its citizens in a special place in our hearts. As an ex-military wife, I have lived in cities all over the country and met a lot of interesting people, but I am still proud to claim Parma as my home town. To the writer of that letter I can only say, "You must be one unhappy person to take time to write such an ugly message. I'm glad it was deleted."

Subject: Discovering Oz!
CITY: Oz
Message: Every year at about the same time - as surely as fall gives way to winter - and then to spring - there is a metamorphosis which occurs and brings me back to "Oz". I do not arrive with the "tornado" of Oz... but rather with the invigoration of once again reliving my youthful days in one of God's favorite spots! To enter Oz, one needs to be a true believer.. and, it is helpful to have been there in the formative years of youth. I have returned many times since my youth but it was only during this visit that I fully understood the magic of Oz.... In MY Oz, I do not see the boarded up buildings which have been abandoned by the family farms gone from the past. In MY Oz, I do not see the closed schools and churches, and I do not see the quiet stillness of the town. What I do see is through the eyes of a believer - born and reared in that land of Oz - oh so many years ago. As the hours of this years celebration were drawing to a close and Oz was again ready to return to the quiet, peaceful pumpkin of Parma - I finally understood why I keep returning. As midnight approached and all was dark and quiet - I stood in the center of town - under the sometimes working traffic light - and looked all around me. Even on that hot and muggy night I felt a chill go over me and at that moment I discovered what I believe to be the truth. The boarded up doors and the boarded up windows of all those buildings were not boarded up to keep people and things OUT - they were boarded up to keep the MEMORIES IN!! Don't let them get away! With these aged eyes and with a fading memory - I can still see my youth and its characters along the way which helped create me - whatever that may be or however well that turned out. On one end of one street, Scholfield's had a car dealership & later so did George Overfield - Dodge & Plymouth. Focus Morgan had the hot spot hangout in his drugstore & Blanky made the best milkshakes and pineapple sundaes anywhere around. Pascal Gardner's Drug store & the daily papers; John Mack Leigh and his insurance office; Meddie Smith & his 5 & 10; John Young and Wallace Gerard cutting hair.. and "Shine" putting the glow to a pair of shoes; Leonard Braden and then Mr. Clements running the movie house - 10 cents until you turned 12 then it was 35 cents; Rosa Hall handling the Postmistress chores; Grocer stores alive and busy... Encil Knight, E.J. & Nellie Reynolds, Sherrills, Pop & Margie Grimsley, Wink Knight and 10 cent comic books, Greggs, General Store of Leo King, W.L. Ramsey Hardware and Implement with Buck Knight, Glendal Beard, Pete Parkman & in the shop Johnny Daniels, Lee Orman and Frank Bean; A.D. Brown & his bar, grill and pool hall; Lutes pool hall, and even Blanky had one. Frank Edge, Bill Leonberger, Gene Knight had cafes; Glenda Davis and Demetra Braden did the hairdos! Orville & Russell Coffee, Shaw Brothers, Perk Ledbetter, Ray & Annabelle Webb had the gas stations at 16 cents a gallon. Lucy Brothers and Alstuns did dry goods; Huey Kitchens and John Teeters guarded the peace; E.B. Gee & Mahan Gins running 24 hours a day; Doc Husted & Thelma caring for our ills & birthing our sons and daughters - along with Doc Gilbert; Frank Catron and his junk yard; Hallie Norman and the lumber yard; Gratz furniture store; Sam & Marie Widner did "The Home Tribune" every week; Mrs. Scott Barney kept turning out the best bookkeepers and typists in the state; Mr. Merrick maintained scholastic order - along with Virginia Parker his faithful secretary; Sarah Keith and "number please?" - ours was "4-9"; Mrs. Conatser ruling over the piano lessons; Mr. Salyer and the "tax man cometh"; Lorwood Plantation alive and well; The "spit and whittle bench:; Mr. Denson could squeeze walnuts with his good hand and put a permanent charie-horse on your knee; Pap Jones and his miracle of making warts go away; Ed Glapensky keeping the school working; the Mississippi River flood of the early 1940s and the Bootheel tornado that destroyed our school; Picking cotton from dayligh to dark - but only half day on Saturdays. All of this turned the streets of Parma into a hustle & bustle of activity on Saturdays - and the streets welled with "walkers" on Saturday night so thick you could not stir them with a stick. And, Frank Highfil won the drawing for the new car at the sesquicentennial! Ditch-8, bridge dances, Townley House, Swirley Top, Pop Warners, Riddle Hill. Then there was the Malden Drive-In movies - hide in the trunk and get in free!! Swimming trips to the New Madrid pool. Skating parties at the Malden skating rink. Summer Boy Scout trips to Camp Llewellan. "Sneak Days" at Wappapello Lake. And let us never forget the true value of the "Senior Trip"! Especially, if Cagle drove the bus!! So, while realizing that these memories of Oz are endless, and while Judy Garland never visited my Oz - I will again return to refill my mind with just enough of the fuzzy feel-goods to last another year - when I will again return for more. Each time I return, I will again, with the approach of midnight on Saturday night, stand under the sometimes working traffic light and look all around me. I know I will feel again the magic of Oz - see behind the boarded windows and doors - and watch excitedly as my youth will once again come to life.

I enjoyed seeing everyone, my friends from the class of 56, and especially my classmates that attended this year for the first time. It is my wish that the picnic will be a tradition for many years to come. lordon6970@hotmail.com

I can't remember when I have laughed so much, in fact, my boogie shoes are in the shop getting retreads for next year. (Just kidding!) And to those of you who know where the truly exclusive elite meet on Saturday night (you know who you are), super thanks, I am still wired!!!!! A special thanks for the few who work so hard every year to make it HAPPEN in Parma. God bless. Hope to see you again next year, and the year after that, ........

Message: Just attended the 1961 HS reunion and annual Parma Picnic. It was great to see so many old friends, and get reacquainted. I lived in Parma from the time I was 5 (1948), until I was 18 (1961), then moved to St. Louis area to work for U.S. Govt. I went on to get married, have two sons, and now have 3 grandsons, 3 granddaughters. Finally had opportunity to get my Masters Degree in Mental Health Nursing in 1988, and have actually been a registered nurse, both medical and mental health over the past 25 years. Retired last year, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I can now play lots of tennis, which I thoroughly love, guess I will take up golf when my legs give out. Thanks again to all of you who did such a great job with the picnic, especially my old friends, Tom Daniels & Raymond Dickerson. Hope to try to make it on regular basis from now on!!

Message: For a couple of years, I've been unable to attend the July 4 weekend. What a warm thrill to be here and rendezvous in time with very dear friends from the 1950s! Since this is the 50th birthday of my trumpet, it asked me to bring it back home. After the Friday night doings, it shared this deep feeling that a lot of the people it met are pieces of music.

Message: I am looking forward to attending the Parma Picnic again this year. The 4th of July just wouldn't be the same. The people of Parma are truly one-of-a-kind. I have attended all but two picnics over the past 20-something years since I was a kid. My parents are Welton and Sharon (Brannon) Wagner. My hat is off to all the people who work so hard to make it so special for everyone else. They do a great job! My husband, Steve, and I think that "Parma BBQ" is the best. I hope to see my friends of all ages on Saturday and don't miss the softball game of Friday night. Come and help me root for my little sister, Kristi (Wagner) Armstrong. She's a real slugger!

CITY: Slebration. Actually, I did not see any pictures of Hispanics, Orientals, etc. either. I did see black people at the celebration. Hoffman, you fit the mold of the people which love to continue the racial dissention pattern. I gratuated in the class of 1956, which class did you gratuate in Hoffman? Apparently you have your head in a dark place; the same dark place Jackson, Sharpton, Mfume, the Clinton gang and the other people in WA where you apparently reside. You stated you were there 4 months. Where were you on celebration day? You stated you did see any of the people in the pictures while you were there. You certainly did not see me, I was only there for the clebration and was most of the other people. You statement of "kind of sad" is so true. People such as you are real sad. You just cannot live without injecting racial overtones into all of your every day life. Try removing your head from that dark spot, and see the true light of day. If you want to take issue with me on this, please feel free to do so. Take issue on this web page, so everyone can see and read of your ignorance first hand.
